This is National Scoop the Poop Week and Dog Poop Day!

April 25, 2013

This is National Scoop the Poop Week and Dog Poop Day!  Are you celebrating yet?!  This is a time to clean up the canine calling cards left by Fido and Fifi over the winter.  Be gone land mines!  Besides creating a nasty mess in your yard (or your neighbor’s), it’s a health hazard and can even pollute the groundwater.  Pets can carry many intestinal parasites, some of which are zoonotic, which is why it is important to pick up after your pet not just today but every day.   It won’t go away by itself, so this is the week to scoop it up and dispose of it properly.  Your family, friends and neighbors will thank you for cleaning it up, and so will your dog!

This week is National Pet ID Week!

April 19, 2013

This week is National Pet ID Week! Identification for your pets is an important way to keep them safe. For many, this means tags for their collar. However, what if your pet slips out of their collar or loses their tags or collar? Microchips are an additional form of identification that can identify your pet even if it loses its collar. A microchip is a permanent means of identification that is implanted under an animal’s skin. The chip can be read using special equipment by any veterinarian or animal control officer and provides the information needed to reunite the animal with its owner. A microchip also provides proof of legal ownership if your pet is lost or stolen. According to a research study, the return rate for lost animals with microchips was 20 times higher for cats and 2 ½ times higher for dogs compared to lost animals without a microchip. For the remainder of the month we are offering a special on pet microchips! Get your pet micro-chipped today for just $25, which includes lifelong registration! Call today or click here for more information!

Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week

April 16, 2013

The third week in April is Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week.  Most American households claim pets as a part of their family. Unfortunately, that treatment sometimes extends to domestic violence.  Pets can be victims as much as human family members.  Studies show clear links between animal abuse and family violence. Search “animal cruelty and family violence” on the internet and you’ll find many links detailing this connection.  Be alert when and if you discover a situation of animal abuse , often there are other abuses taking place in the household as well. Turn in situations of animal abuse for the sake of all involved and  you might just be saving more than one life.  Click here for more information!

April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month!

April 9, 2013

This is one of Dr. Keller’s favorite topics to discuss, Lyme Disease!  April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month.  Last year we saw an enormous boom in the amount of dogs that tested positive for Lyme, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichia (all tick-borne diseases).  From puppies to seniors, from indoor only dogs to outdoor dogs, we certainly felt the bite.  Ticks in the area are clearly carrying these diseases, and many are in our own back yard.  So what can you do?  First, don’t pass on the heartworm test.  Catching these diseases in their early stages has a far better outcome than catching them when your pet develops clinical signs.  At our clinic, our heartworm test also tests for these three common tick-borne diseases.  Second, be religious about applying monthly prevention ON TIME.  And last but not least, have your dog vaccinated against Lyme disease so that he/she is adequately protected.  For more information visit this great website Dogs and Ticks!
